Encrypted Text: Exposé on Expose Armor

Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the rogue class. This week, we discuss one of the least-appreciated rogue abilities, Expose Armor. I took the above screenshot by pushing one of two Expose Armor macros I have.

One of the most common complaints that I hear from the rogue community is that we don’t provide enough useful buffs to make ourselves worth taking to a raid. The rumor was originally true; in fact, rogues had a bad reputation for actually knocking off important debuffs when there used to be a limit. I remember my raid leader using the CT_Raid addon to look for Phantom Blades and Gutgore Rippers, then kicking anyone wielding them. We were the simple rogues, brought to stab our enemies and soak up any leather gear that dropped.

Times have changed. Both of the popular PvE rogue specs now possess a critical raid debuff. Mutilate has the fairly common Master Poisoner critical strike chance debuff, which is brought by a few other DPS specs as well. Combat, however, has the fairly unique Savage Combat debuff, which we share with arms-specced warriors alone. Since arms warriors aren’t exactly common in the high-end raiding game, we’re essentially the only way to pick up that serious boost. Add in the fact that Tricks of the Trade is often glyphed to provide maximum uptime, and we’ve actually got one of the better buffs in the game as well. All of this doesn’t even include our most beneficial raid ability by far.

In honor of the recently concluded Comic-Con festivities, the Japanese Hardware Sales post has decided to indulge in a bit of cosplay, donning the vestaments of its favorite weekend-based Joystiq feature — other than itself, of course. Unfortunately, with only the most basic of Photoshop skills and having been forbidden from infringing on the territory of the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, this is really the best he could do:

“Welcome to the Weekly Japanese Hardware Sales Wrapup! Click past the jump to see the most recent Japanese hardware sales figures. Also, click here to see the most recent Marmaduke. He’s a dog … who thinks he’s a person! Can you even handle that? We do not think you can.”

Every Sunday, Chase Christian of The Light and How to Swing It invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. This week, we discuss how paladins are basically healing siege tanks.

Superman is faster than a speeding bullet, but even a sliver of green kryptonite can bring him to his knees. Batman may be incredibly intelligent, but a single bullet could end his career. Spider-Man’s agility carries him through his endeavors, but he’s crippled when his family is in danger. Every hero has a weakness. We may not have an S” on our chests, but holy paladins aren’t excluded from this flaw. We are as weak at mobile healing as we are strong at stationary healing. While standing still, we have the strength of Atlas, pillars of holy light that can hold up the world. While on the run, flailing is about the best we can do.

While many of our mobility issues are being addressed in Cataclysm, that’s still out on the horizon and no help to us. We’ve got to figure out how to heal while moving now. The development team at Blizzard isn’t going to stop making encounters that involve motion, and holy paladins need to adapt to these environments. Even if we’re not the most potent healers while running, we do have a few tricks up our sleeves that can get the job done. As great as Judgement of Light may be, we still need to actually do some casting if we want everyone to stay alive.
