Another month, yet another PS3 firmware update. Little over one month since 3.41 (and two months since 3.40) comes yet another mandatory update for your PS3. Firmware 3.42 seemingly doesn’t add any functionality to your system beyond the usual “system software stability,” but it is required if you want to continue accessing the PlayStation Network or the PlayStation Store.

While unverified, this update may be a response to a recently-released jailbreak tool, which supposedly enables piracy on Sony’s once-bulletproof system. We’ll update this story if Sony provides any additional details on what this firmware does exactly.

I’m so sorry I never had the stream last week as promised. I got sick, then The Spawn got sick and we had to go visit Great Grandpa who was sick. Boo! (The Spawn and I are fully recovered and Great Grandpa is well cared for.) You may have also noticed we didn’t have our usual polls on Friday. That’s because we are going to have them on Wednesdays from now on. Our adventures will be recapped on Mondays, which begins today with the return of Foxlight and Patent after the break. Ch-ch-ch-changes! But first, the schedule:

When Insomniac announced the co-op focused Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One at Gamescom last month, we were all thinking the same thing: How did the series with the clever titles – Going Commando; Up Your Arsenal; Size Matters; Quest for Booty – miss out on the most obvious title here?

4play. Duh.

It turns out the guys at Insomniac didn’t miss it, they just decided not to use it. “At the end of the day, I think we didn’t want to scare off the parents who might be buying the game for their kid,” series writer TJ Fixman told an audience at PAX this weekend. “So we went with ‘All 4 One.’” Better still, they had other names, four of which they shared with us last night and, since we heart you, we’ll share with you here.

  • Multiple Organisms
  • Bros b4 Foes (Community Manager James Stevenson clarified the ‘b4′ spelling)
  • Fiends with Benefits

Even better, we were later told there’s a spreadsheet with over a hundred possible titles on it but, without that in our possession (send it to us, Insomniac!) we’ve got to do the next best thing. We’re asking for your contributions in the comments below. But before you get to that, we’re going to ask you to vote for your favorite title in the poll below. Our guess: “All 4 One” isn’t going to make the top spot.

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft is absolutely full of trolls — not the trade chat kind, the actual race. Whether you’re traveling the southern continents or icy heights of Northrend, the trolls are everywhere; vanilla WoW and both expansions have all included troll content of some kind or another. The original game had Zul’Farrak, Sunken Temple and then later Zul’Gurub. The Burning Crusade didn’t see much of the trolls in Outland (beyond a few settlements, of course), but trolls played a large part in high elf (now blood elf) history and currently plague the Ghostlands. Eventually we saw the release of Zul’Aman, and with Wrath’s release, we were introduced to the ice trolls of Zul’Drak and their capital, Gun’Drak.

While there have been vague hints — stone tablets and other records — documenting the history of the race, there’s very little solid information regarding the trolls. Big events have been documented, but the day-to-day life and the origins of the trolls aren’t really addressed beyond “they have been on Azeroth since the beginning.” Of all the various troll tribes, only one is playable — the Darkspear tribe that now makes its home on Kalimdor. The trolls of the Darkspear have not only made a new home for themselves upon Cataclysm’s release, but they’ve also found two new paths to follow; players will be able to choose troll druids and warlocks with the expansion’s launch. In order to understand the Darkspear, a closer look at its origins and the origins of one of the bloodiest wars in Azeroth’s history is necessary.

I know times are tight, especially for one-man indie dev teams, but, as a service to the gamers of Earth, Chris Hecker has got to get a better booth.
In a nondescript corner of PAX, under a nondescript banner and sporting slightly worse than nondescript graphics (all placeholder, Hecker assured) it would have been easy to miss SpyParty. It would have been a particularly unfortunate fate considering it was (drumroll) the best thing I’ve played at PAX so far.

There are all of those inside jokes, those gaming and pop culture references that we slip into conversation now and again, eliciting a chuckle from those “in the know.” Now imagine you had enough knowledge to make a game and decided, “Hey, what the heck? I’ll go ahead and put in a nod toward this classic in my game.” That’s kinda what Brian Provinciano did.

He came up with Retro City Rampage, a self-professed “open world action parody” that started out as Grand Theftendo, an attempt to create Grand Theft Auto 3 on the NES. It kinda snowballed from there and eventually ended up being Retro City Rampage, a retro sandbox game with plenty of moxie.

Blizzard’s been hard at work adjusting a lot of WoW’s game systems for Cataclysm, and one of the biggest changes in the pipeline is the overhaul of the inscription profession. You may remember the Path of the Titans alternate advancement system was axed in favor of making inscription, well, better. On top of other changes and a new UI, part of this task is adding a new tier of glyphs — called prime glyphs — on top of the already-existing tiers of major and minor.

Ghostcrawler recently had this to say about the new glyph system:

Prime glyphs aren’t going to be exciting in a “change up your rotation” style. We want primes to be unambiguous dps (etc.) increases so we figured they might as well be easy to understand rather than something so convoluted that everyone would just go to a fansite to see which 3 to pick.

The majors are more interesting, because they are either not dps increases at all, or dps increases in ways that are tricky to math out. We think players will debate and geek out more about which majors to use, and with the new glyph design, swapping them out once in awhile isn’t very painful.

Minors are basically convenience or fun.


Several classes have had their glyphs worked on and updated as of this beta patch, but only rogues and shaman glyph passes appear to be “done,” so we’ve listed glyphs for those two after the break.

Shin’en, developer of the DS shmup Nanostray and its sequel — and, most recently, WiiWare platformer Jett Rocket – has begun to tease its next project for Wii’s digital platform: FAST Racing League. Only a single piece of promotional art (pictured) has been revealed so far, but this image is worth at least a couple dozen words. Like, for example, the game looks to be a futuristic racer and the ship design bears an uncanny similarity to those of a certain Sony racing franchise.

It’s too soon to hope for an F-Zero style racer on Wii (where is the Wii game in that series, anyway?) but at least those of us who like our racing fast and future-focused have something to put on our radar.

    Southpeak has announced that its chess title, Battle vs Chess (which is totally not Battle Chess) is headed to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 28. Much like Interplay’s classic game of nearly the same name, Battle vs Chess lets players compete in the ancient strategy game using animated pieces. Battle vs Chess also includes several different gameplay modes, including a campaign mode and puzzle mode which house “over 50 puzzles and scenarios.” Another mode allows players to manually place pieces, which can only be seen by the opponent after the game begins.

    The PC version will retail for $20, while the Xbox and PlayStation 3 versions will be available for $40. Meanwhile, the Wii, DS and PSP versions are slated to be released in the first quarter of 2011 with prices still under wraps for now.

    In a recent Totem Talk post, I made a loot list for enhancement shamans that have access to ICC but are not progression raiders, because they are either alts or they are — drum roll, please — casual. That’s right: I used the c-word without context. Casual. There, I said it again without context. Excuse me while I duck from the rotten vegetables being thrown in my direction.

    The use of that c-word in relation to an Icecrown Citadel loot list sparked a very interesting comment thread. Most comments were well thought-out, added value and furthered the discussion. Some were, to borrow Adam Savage’s favorite term, vitriolic, because of my heinous misuse of the term “casual.” I said it again without context. I’m just casually throwing around “casuals” here.

    Given the reaction that post received, I started doing some research into what exactly “casual” and “hardcore” actually mean. What I found was not surprising at all: They mean completely different things to absolutely everyone. The MMO population of players, across all games, is estimated at over 61 million people. There are as many variations on play time and playstyle as there are players in the game. Do you really think we can divide this many people simply into two groups of just casuals and hardcores?

    I think it’s time we move beyond the polarizing definitions of casual and hardcore and come up with some definitions of our own.

    Dead Rising 2: Case Zero is kind of difficult to judge. While it is a standalone title, it’s not really a full game per se. It is, essentially, DLC for a game that hasn’t been released yet, an extension of Dead Rising 2. Of course, no one has had that experience yet, meaning that Case Zero serves double duty as a demo as well. It’s an interesting experiment for Capcom and for the industry in general; thankfully for Dead Rising fans, it pays off.

    The comments of the last few installments of the Japanese Hardware Sales saga have seemed to focus on a pair of dear, dear friends whom we lost in the Futurestiq relaunch: The Green Up and Red Down Arrows. We miss them just as much as the next person — more, probably — but their tendency to go rogue just didn’t jibe with the direction in which the rest of the site was moving. As a result, we went our separate ways, and then we had them assassinated, because if we can’t have them, no one can.

    No use crying over spilled arrow blood, though, is there? We’ve got the future to think of! The future, with its boundless options for methods to symbolize whether numbers are increasing or decreasing. Why, there’s some new ones in the chart posted after the jump right now! You’re going to love them! Or else you’re going to sleep with the arrows.

    Axes, maces, lightning, Windfury and wolves. It can mean only one thing: enhancement. Rich Maloy lives it and loves it. His main spec is enhance. His off-spec is enhance. He blogs about the life and times of enhance, and leads the guild Big Crits (Week 12 now out!)as the enhancement shaman Stoneybaby.

    Holy Stormstrikes! I’m going to refrain from using the term casual in a post ever again. Wait, I just used it there. Ah well, rack that promise up with “I’ll never drink again” and “I’ll never die to cutters again.” Lies, all of them, lies.

    We all have different definitions of the term and judging by the comments in the last post, others’ definition of casual is more severe than mine. I’ll get into casual vs. hardcore and the ridiculousness of those classifications in another post. For now, I hear you loud and clear, so let’s refrain from diving into that now.

    I digress. As I was writing last week’s article I had this sneaking suspicion that I already wrote several articles on gearing your non-end game enhancement shaman. In fact I had written articles many moons ago, and they are all on my neglected blog, Big Hit Box. Time for a revisit.

    There is a huge untapped market for console manufacturers: China. While Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo struggle to deal with Chinese government regulations, one company is seeking to create a new console specifically for the territory. Lenovo is prepping the “eBox,” a new console that has Kinect-esque functionality in mind. With 120 million families as “potential buyers” in China, it’s certainly a lucrative opportunity for the company to pursue.

    A team of 40 Lenovo engineers are now working at a spin-off firm called Beijing eedoo Technology, and although the company has been in operation for less than a month, it seems confident in what the eBox can do. “We are the world’s second company to produce a controller-free game console, behind only Microsoft,” eedoo’s Jack Luo told China Daily. Although there’s no mention of a playable prototype, or finalized design, the eBox is expected to be available as soon as the first quarter of 2011, with a price higher than the Wii, and possibly lower than the Xbox.

    Like the Wii, eBox won’t be designed to have “exquisite game graphics.” Instead, it will serve to “inspire family members to get off the couch and get some exercise” — a mantra that has served Nintendo well this generation. With eedoo claiming 16 “global video game developers” working on content for the eBox, it won’t be long until China will be able to get its share of yoga, pilates and dancing video games.
