Notebook Reviews - Asus intros GPS-equipped U3S laptop

, Laptops

Asus looks to be keeping busy on the GPS front these days, with it now following up its just-introduced navigators with what it claims to be the “world’s first mainstream notebook PC with integrated GPS capability.” That particular distinction goes to the company’s new U3S laptop, which relies on NXP Software’s swGPS system for navigation duties. Among other things, NXP’s system does all the necessary GPS signal processing entirely in software, which not only allows it to be much smaller, but also opens up the possibility of fairly significant software upgrades (including support for Galileo). From the looks of it, the laptop itself is also no slouch, with the usual Centrino Duo-related goods and some unspecified discreet graphics under the hood. Just don’t expect “mainstream” to mean “cheap,” with the laptop set to run €2,300 (or $3,200) when it’s released later this month.

Shortly after doling out a few new LaVies, NEC has now unveiled a new 17-incher for the media-centric set. The Versa P9110 comes in a trio of standard configurations, and offers up a range of Intel Core 2 Duo processors, Vista Home Premium / Ultimate, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, between 160GB and 250GB of hard drive space, 7.1-channel audio, NVIDIA’s GeForce 8400M GS, a 56k modem for connecting up in dire situations, and a built-in mic for chatting, too. Furthermore, you’ll get a dual-layer DVD burner, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, an ExpressCard slot, three USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire connector, VGA / HDMI outputs, a four-in-one multicard reader, 1.3-megapixel webcam, a numeric keypad, WXGA+ widescreen panel, and of course, a built-in “subwoofer” to compliment the four speakers. No word on price just yet, but it’s slated to land within the next couple of weeks.
